Abstract: Teachers are tasked with motivating students in a variety of ways. One skill they constantly reinforce in students is reading and writing for a variety of purposes. We want students to be able to read and understand a variety of genres, as well as communicate with other people in different forms. Author Web sites offer a place for students to learn about published authors. Connecting with authors often motivates students to do more reading and writing. In this course, you will learn about author studies and how they can be enhanced by the use of Internet resources.
Outcomes:

After completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Align your author study to your local, state and/or national Language Arts standards.
  • Explain an author study and describe how it can support/enhance student reading and writing.
  • Locate Internet resources for an author study.
  • Design an author study that is meaningful for your students and your curriculum.
  • Develop steps and strategies for activities in an author study.
  • Design an assessment tool to evaluate student learning.
  • Develop a plan to implement your author study in your classroom.
Timeline: You will have 12 weeks to complete this course. If you wish to complete the course after this period, you must re-enroll and pay any applicable enrollment fee.
