| Abstract: |
In an age of increasingly visual depictions of reality, a decline in aural attention spans, as well as the contemporary craving for interactivity, both information dispersal and communication have evolved from predominantly print material to a smorgasbord of multimedia presentations - a fusion of visual, aural, and linguistic elements. Influenced by this trend, and the resultant drop in reading comprehension due to a lack of self-directed reading, educators report a marked reduction in student achievement and its attendant woes: classroom management problems and low morale. Consequently, teachers are constantly searching for ways to improve writing skills, engage inattentive learners, improve student achievement, and provide valid, real-life projects that challenge and inspire the student. Storytelling is an intuitive and engaging activity that not only offers a venue for introspection, but also provides avenues for improving students' writing and communication skills. Through storytelling, students are engaged in reading stories written by their friends or others, writing their own stories, and developing aural communication skills to present their stories. Further, they also rely on their analytic abilities, and social interaction skills as they organize, write, and present their own narratives.
Accordingly, in this course, you will design an inquiry-based teaching unit that engages students in communication activities by introducing them to personal narratives. These stories encourage students to develop both written and spoken communication skills by engaging them in writing the narrative and developing a visual presentation for their classmates or community members.
