Course: SO206
Title: "Exploring the Mint and Post Office: How can I use the Internet to help students learn about North America using coin and stamp resources?"
Author: Michael Barbour
Course Fee: $250.00
Credits: 2 graduate credits available
Instructor: LTTS Facilitator
Abstract: Through policies adopted in the 1990s, the relationships of the three countries that make up North America (Canada, Mexico, and the United States) have continued to become more interwoven. Because of the continued integration of the economic, military, and political policies of the three North American countries, it is important that students become more knowledgeable about the history, geography, and systems of government of not only their own country, but of their North American neighbors. While the governments of these three countries are moving toward greater integration, there are still many students who are unfamiliar with their North American neighbors, let alone the rest of the world. This reality poses a challenge for social studies teachers who need to help students develop a better sense of the interconnectedness of the three North American countries.

In this course, you will develop an inquiry-based unit that provides students with the opportunity to explore the history, geography, and government of one or more countries in North America through examining and analyzing coins and stamps through online and offline resources.

Outcomes: After completion of this course, you will be able to:
  • Develop learning activities that include goals and learning objectives.
  • Design facilitation plans for the learning activities.
