Author: Walden & Huber
Course Fee: $150.00
Credits: 1 graduate credit available
Instructor: LTTS Facilitator
Abstract: Understanding research is critical to understanding the meaning and validity of information presented in school and through the media. Understanding and evaluating research builds skills in analysis, critical thinking, integration, and synthesis: skills vital for success in any life path a student chooses to follow. For many students, research might seem like something foreign, and not connected to their lives. Often, instructors teach research in the same way, focusing on theoretical aspects without connecting it to real life examples. Indiana has some of the country’s highest rates of deaths from diseases resulting from unhealthy lifestyles: smoking, obesity, and lack of physical activity. There is ample research indicating that much can be done to prevent chronic disease through education and behavior change. Healthy People 2010 outlines specific steps for achieving the best possible health. As teachers become better equipped to understand research and apply it to a real life issue like health, they will be better able to help students understand research and apply it to their own lives. In this course, you will examine examples of research in the areas of health and health promotion to develop a series of lesson plans to engage your students in understanding and applying research to their own lives.
